SPIN COATER INSTRUCTIONS

The spin coater is generally used to fabricate thin film on a substrate by rotating at the desired speed for a set time. Following instructions are only to be used as a guide.

  1. Take the lid off the spin coater. Cover the Teflon coated bowl with aluminum foil to prevent extra leaking of the sample in side the machine. This also helps to subsequent cleaning of the Teflon bowl.

  2. Place the correct vacuum chuck onto spindle.

  3. Turn on power button of coating unit as well as of vacuum pump.

  4. Place the substrate on the chuck. Care should be taken that the centre of gravity of the substrate should align with the axis of rotation to prevent liftoff.

  5. Set the spin speed.

    a) Without a sample on the substrate, set the preset time on spin coater for 60 s.

    b) Close the spin coater lid. Turn on the spinner and with spinner running adjust spin speed until display reads desired spin rate (in revolutions per minute).

    c) After adjustment turn off the spinner.

Now dispense the sample (whose coating is needed) at the centre of the substrate. Amount of sample depends on area of the substrate to be covered and spinning rate.

  6. Set spin time for desired spin duration.

  7. Close the spin coater lid.

  8. Turn on the spinner.

  9. When the cycle is completed, remove spin coater cover. Coating process is finished.

  10. Turn off vacuum switch to release sample, then remove the substrate.

  11. Remove chuck and clean with acetone if necessary.

  12. Remove foil liner and discard.

  13. Replace spin coater cover and turn off power.
